"Down River" post 51

If you were Tally, would you ask the warden to make you pretty?
No, I think that Tally should not have asked the warden to make her pretty. this is because I think that Tally should not want ot become it. She should not be taking the risk of her life.

"Confessions" post 50

Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind about her?
I think Tally will never regret telling the truth, what she will regret is making up the lies. This may hurt David now, but if he really likes her, then he will forgive her. Eventually.

"Hippocratic Oath" post 49

Should Maddy have forced Shay to take the take the pills? Why or Why not?
Maddy was right to not force the pills to Shay, Shay did not want to take the pills, so she shouldn't have to.

"Night Alone" post 48

If you were Shay, would you get the cure? why or why not?
If I were Shay, I would not get the cure, these pills could be harmful to me and even result in fatality. I would not want to take that kind of risk.

"Get Away" post 47

What does the following quote mean to you?
"Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancers, or wounds, or whatever they are that she didn't even know. They were in there somewhere, changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."
This quote shows that Tally really cares about Shay and knows what is going on. Tally only wants to help get rid of these lesions.

"Rescue" post 46

Give a chronological list of events in this chapter. What's the kicker at the end of the chapter?

"Inside" post 45

Is this quote a play on words or does it have a deeper meaning to the story?
"Radiology, Neurology. Magnetic Imaging." she read softly. "Operating Theatre Two"
I think that Operating Theatre two is an operating room. This one is probably special, though. I think that this room is where doctors go to learn how to preform the surgery, by watching it take place.
What "labels do Tally and David see? Give a brief description of what you think each is.
Interrogation Rom One: This is where the Specials ask questions to people who could have done something bad, or might know things that they shouldn't.
Morgue: This is where dead people are kept.):
Interrogation Room Two: This room is in case interrogation room one is full.
Isolation Room One: This is most likely a dungeon, but with a nicer name
Disorientation Room One: If aomeone passes out or if they are confused they go here.
Long-Term Detention: This is like a jail, only a nicer name. Just like the Isolation Room. hahaha
Describe Shay's appearance at the end of the chapter using textual evidence.
"they were flecked with copper and gold" "tall" "elegant"

"Over the Edge" post 45

In this Chapter a few Uglies go to New Pretty Town to do a trick. They make the words" THE SMOKE LIVES" with sparklers. If you had ONE chance to post a message important to you what would it be and why?
I would talk about my family and tell everyone how great they are and that you should love your family.

"accomplices" post 44

The Uglies they met in this chapter are similar to Tally in the beginning of the book. When her to these uglies, how has Tally changed and what has made her change?
Tally has changed from a little kid who likes to play tricks on people into a older teenager who knows that she is wrong and feels guilty about it, she has little knowledge on what is right and wrong sometimes. the main reason for this change is mostly the smoke.

"Familiar sights" post 43

Do you think that Tally's plan will work? David wants to save his parents, but what is Tally's motive? Do you think she is crazy or are her feelings valid?
I think that tally's plan won't work. I think that she can't fool the Specials.
However Tally will try her hardest to find David's parents because she really likes David and his parents are important to him.

"Oil Plague" post 42

How do David and Tally describe the Rusties? Is it accurate?
Tally and David describe the rusties as people who are crazy for using so much oil. However they know that the oil Plague was most likely an accident.

What are weaknesses of our society?
In the present day society, you are classified mostly by two things, money and looks. Though this is not always true, if you have good looks, you can be a model or movie star and make lots of money. If you have alot of money than people want to be your friend sometimes for your personality, and sometimes for your money. It not always this way though, if you do something really good, then maybe you could be known for it.
What are the weaknesses of their society?
In the book Uglies, their society makes children feel as if they aren't worth anything unless their pretty. However, even when you do turn, you have a wacko brain job along with it and you don't think the same ways as you used to. So your not creative.

Find information and a picture about a time when we weren't prepared.

"Ruin" post 40

Describe the irony of Tally's "victory" over Dr. Cable. what was lost in the process?
Tally's victory is that she saved a peice of history, but the life of the boss was lost. :(

"Amazing" post 37

Is David right? Is tally amazing? Do you think she should she feeling guilty? Why or Why not?
I think Tally is not amazing, she tells way too many lies and should have come out with the truth in the begining. However I do not think that Tally should feel guilty because all she was doing was trying to dispose of the pendant because she started to like the smoke.

"Run" post 38

Who is the voice in the dark?Do you think will be a friend or a enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally will do now?
The voice in the bushes is most likely a close friend of Tally. I think this because if Smokies are smart enough to live in the wild, they might be able to escape the specials. I think that if Tally knows the person she will start a new Smoke with the person. hahahaha

"In Case of Damage" post 37

Explain what self preservation means to you. Is it the most important thing? Would you lie because of it?
self preservation means to respect yourself and make good choices. If you let someone control you, it is doing no good to anybody. You need to hold yourself to a certain standard, if you don't you will either get caught up in lies or let people run all over you. Even thuogh this is not the most important thing in the world, you should think of self preservation.

"The Rabbit Pen" post 36

Tally had changed her mind about the smoke and the operation, but what will she do about all that now? Whose side is she on?
Since Tally changed her mind about the Smoke she is more than likely on the smokies' sides. Now that Tally has learned about the operation, she will not be wanting to go back to the city and will put up a fight to escape. Even if she does thuogh it will be a tough life with nobody to live with.

"Invasion" post 35

Is the climax of the book? Explain why or why not in a few sentences.
This is the climax of the book because it makes you really tense. The climax of a story is when the story gets most interesting and has the most emotional thoughts. This is the climax of the book because everyone is in a frazzle and Taloly feels as if she did this in a way, but didn't mean to.

"Burning Bridges" post 34

Read thye following quote David says to Tally. "What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful." Name one person in your personal life and one person in your academic life... what makes them beautiful?
In my personal life I look up to my mom, because she is always there for me. What makes her most beautiful though is that she is very seldomly mad, andshe always has good ideas. (Is that how you spell seldomly?:) The person in my academic is someone who is very sweet, they always seem to be there to joke around.

"Pretty Minds" post33

Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you/the story?
"Becoming pretty doesn't just change the way you look...it changes the way you think."
How would you want to change mentally and physically if you were pretty?
This quote tells the reader that what most people think is not true. Uglies have been taught that being pretty was the best thing to do, but what they don't know is that the way they think is also being changed. If I were pretty and knew about the brain chip thing, I would want to become educated and not stupid like most prettys. I would probably not want to be changed physically though.

"The Secret" post 32

What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general? "But you do know about genetics don't you? Sure, I know all about genes. I knew two sisters, uglies, who looked almost the same. But parents and children? That's just weird"
This quote tells you that the operation takes each individual's characteristics away. So mostly evryone looks almost the same.
Predict what you think being "pretty" is.
I think that being pretty is to have a great personality.

"Bravery" post 31

Find an example of imagery, personification and a simile in this chapter.
simile -" Dr. Cable's pendant seemed to grow heavier and heavier, wound around her neck as tightly as the vines..." 243
imagery- "Past cook fires being extinguished with shovelfuls of dirt; windows coming alight with candles and elcetric bulbs;..." 245
personification- "...choking the life out of other plants, out of the soil itself, selfish and unstoppable."

" Suspicion" post 30

Do you think that Shay has the right to be jealous of Tally? Why or why not?
Yes, I think Shay has the right to be jealous of Tally because she was there first and she felt she deserved David.
Tally recieved a gift from David in the chapter that was special. Have you ever recieved a gift that made others jealous as this gift has? Did your gift have a meaning behind it as Tally's had?
Yes, once at Christmas, I recieved five dollars more than my brother. He got so jealous that he tried everything to make me jealous of things he had that I did not. Even though this gift didn't really have tremendous meaning, he still was jealous.

"Heartthrob" post 29

Why would it have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the Smoke? Explain.
If Tally had activated the pendant right when she got to the Smoke it would have been easier because nw she has grown attachd to the smokies. Now Tally knows her decision is affeceting other people.

"David" post 28

If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away? Support your answer with textual evidence.
I think that David's parents were trying to get away from people and start a new city. this is because they know that they can preform the surgery and they would get rich because they're the only doctors.

"Work" post 27

Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. post it. What is beautiful about it?Is there anything ugly about it?

The skyline is beautiful because Tally shows how she can see the city lights and this picture fits it perfectly
The only ugly thing about this picture is that it shows how much energy the city uses.

"model" post 26

What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Tally and Shay have a skewed vision of our time, but what have they got right?
Shay's description of a model is right on. Many girls today think that they have to be little twigs and wear expensive clothing, but relly you should be happy with how you look.

"Lies" post 25

Characterization... David

  • likes Shay

  • gentle

  • knowledgable

  • confident

  • has a nice smile

  • hand made shoes

  • graceful

Find a picture to represent what YOU think the smoke looks like and post it on your blog with an explanation of why you chose it.

I chose this picture because it shows a horse, and the smoke probably has no cars so horses are their main transportation. Also here is no major buildings or buisnesses.

" Bug Eyes" post 24

List the important events of this chapter in chronological order.

  • Tally gets in the helicopter with the rangers
  • The rangers tell Tally why the set the fields on fire
  • The rangers drop Tally off at the "bald head"

Respond to the following qoute: "...Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."

Sometimes life puts you with hard decisions, but you just hav eto do what you think is right.

"Firestorm" post 23

Give one example of each of these from the chapter: imagery, personification, and a simile.
imagery: "...ragged wall of flame moved through the flowers..."
personification: "The fire was growing stronger, fingers of it shot up the hill laeping from one beautiful flower to another."
simile: "... spun it away like a leaf."

"The Side You Dispise" post 22

What do you think the flying machine was? Who was in it? Make a prediction.
The flying machine was a helicopter. Most likely the people who were in it were people that were on a search to find escaped Uglies and punish them.

" The Worst Mistake" post 21

Have you ever made yourself do something that you didn't want to do because you knew you had to?
Yes, clean my room. I never want to clean, but if I don't, all of my clothes would be dirty, and I would never find anything.
Predict what you think will happen next.
I think Shay will pass this obstacle, but soon face another.

" Spagbol" post 20

Invent a dried food you would take with you on your journey if you were Tally. What would it be? What would you name it?
If I were Tally, I would bring buttered noodles. To make these noodles, you must boil the noddles until soft. After that you put some butter over the noodles an let it soak in. It tastes REALLY GOOD.
Make a list of things you would miss about your home if you were forced to leave your home as Tally was.
  1. my bed
  2. my neighbors
  3. the t.v.
  4. the pool

"Leaving" post 19

Why do you think Tally ultimately decides to figure out were Shay is?
Tally really wants to become pretty, so that is her excuse for finding Shay. But I think Tally misses Shay so she will probably go to the Smoke and like it instantly, and decide to stay and not set off the sensor.

"Infiltrator" post 18

Give a chronological list of events that happened in this Chapter.
  1. Tally decides that she should call Dr. Cable
  2. Tally is picked up and then tells Dr. Cable everything she knows
  3. Dr. Cable wants Tally to go on a journey to the smoke, once there she will set of a sensor telling Special Circumstances where she is.

"Peris" post17

Why do you think Peris comes back? Support your answer with textual evidence.
Peris thinks that Tally's not getting pretty is an ugly trick. He and his pretty friends just want Peris to come back to see if the rumors are true.
"This whole trick were you haven't turned pretty yet. Very mysterious."

" Ugly for Life" post 16

Respond to the following quote: " Everywhere she went, eyes looked away. but it was the most visible she'd ever felt."

To most people you don't stick out in the crowd. It's only until you do something and everyone hears about it that you get noticed.

" Special Circumstances" post 15

Summarize the chapter highlighting what was important in chronological order. Predict what you think will happen next.
Tally takes a rough ride to a strange building with very ugly walls. Here she meets Dr. Cable, who seems to know alot about he. Once Tally is seated she is bombarded with queations, but first tally has some questions of her own. In the end Dr. Cable has asked Tally where Shay ha sgone, but Tally will not tell. now she is faced with the choice of turning Shay in or never turning pretty...

characterization Dr. Cable:
  • middle pretty
  • taller than most pretties
  • brutal-loooking
  • sharp nose

"operation" post14b

Summarize the chapter highlighting important events in chronological order. predict what you think will happen next.
Tally has had final measurements and is on her way to the hospital right now in a hovercar. Once she gets there she heads strait to the waiting room and silently waits for the most important event of her new pretty life. but the waiting gets out of hand, seconds turn to minutes, minutes turn to hours, and finally a doctor meets her. However he informs her that there is a problem with the operation.

"Last Trick" post 14a

Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you?
"We don't have to look like everyone else, Tally, and act like everyone else. Wev'e got a choice. We can grow up any way we want."
Even in a town where everyone turns and acts the same, Shay knows that she has a choice. this proves that You really can do anything you want, because if she can in such a stereotype town so can we.

"Fight" post 13

Two fights were presented in this chapter. Compare and contrast them. List similarities and differences. Why did each fight take place? What was the outcome of each one?
The first fight in this chapter took place in the ugly doorm's library, but the second fight took place in the ocean. The first fight was a fake fight, Shay and Tally just wanted to play a trick on the new uglies. The next fight was real, the cause of it was when Shay brought up David. Tally then got mad and called Shay a child who doesn't want to become pretty.

" Waiting for David" post 12

What does th following quote from the chapter tell you about the city?

"That was one thing about being outside the city: It makes all that nature stuff they taught us about in school seem alot more useful. She remembered now how rainwater fell on the mountains and soaked into the ground."

This quote tells you that in the city the technology has really advanced. So much that trees are genetically altered and that most things in the city aren't like things outside it.

"The Rusty Ruins" post 11

Write one paragraph summary of the chapter. Tell the important events in chronological order.
Tally and Shay take a trip at night to the Rusty Ruins. They discover skyscrapers that once stood high. Shay takes tally on a rollercoaster and part of it is missing. This makes Tally mad, but she gets over it, next Shay wants Tally to meet someone.

Find two similes in this cahpter and quote them, as well as the page number.
"The two friends slid between the ruined buildings, riding high and silent as if not to disturb the ghosts of the city." p.61

"it was like a hoverboard course made solid, complete with tight, sharp climbs followed by long drops, even loops that took Tally upside down, her crash bracelets activating, to keep her on her board." p.64

"Rapids" post 10

In this chapter Tally says,"I kind of like being fooled by some things." Do you agree with Tally, or would you rather know the reality behind everything? Why?
I would rather be fooled by some things in life. Say that someone you know is really sick and dying, I would want to believe that they would get well so that there would be hope in my life.

Post information on the origin of white water rafting.

"Pretty Boring" post 9

Describe the Rusty Ruins. What are they? What happened during this time period?
The Rusty Ruins is an old city. This is when were too many people and they were all ugly. They soon started to kill each other over appearances.
Define peer pressure.Think of a time when it happened to you or someone you knowand explain this situation in a paragraph.
peer pressure- when your peers want you to do something that you don't want to, but you might end up doing it because everyone else is doing it.
A couple months ago we had basketball tryouts and I wasn't going to try out. However when I told my friends this they kept bugging to try out. So I did and now I love basketball!!

"Facing the future" post 8

Reflect on the following quotes from the chapter, what does each mean to you?
"making ourselves feel ugly is not fun"..."This whole game i just designed to make us hate ourselves."
This quote means that you love the way you look. If you don't, you will end up having no self confidence.
"Everyone judged everyone else on their appearance. People who were taller got better jobs...people killed eachother over stuff like having different skin color."
Most people were insecure about how they looked and so they started criticizing others and that led to violence.
"It's the only way to make people equal."
People think that the if we look all the same, then were all equal. But really if we focus on whats inside and love eachothers appearances, then we would all be equal.

"Wipeout" post 7

Think of another book, movie or comic that uses hoverboards. How are they used? If possible, post a video of this.
The video that I thought of that uses hoverboards is Back to the Future II. In this movie all you do is throw the hoverboard on the ground and it raises up a couple feet. Then you jump on and push of a couple of times and your flying.

Why do you think the new prettys don't come back to Uglyville? Describe their physical and mental transformations to become a pretty.

The new pretties don't come back to Uglyville because they are brain washed!!! When the uglys become pretty, they get fuller lips and symetrical features, but I think that when its there first day in Pretty Town guards kidnap the new pretties and take them into a small room and hypnotize them.

"Shay" post 6

Write one paragraph summary of this chapter.
As Tally is hiding in the brush of the pleasure garden, she is faced with a figure, who she can't make out in the dark. After a long while of agonizing stillness and silence Tally speaks. This is only to realize that this figure was another ugly, named Shay. Now Tally and Shay are faced with the challenge of escaping without being noticed.
What have you learned about Shay? Is she like Tally? Make a prediction about what will happen between Tally and Shay.
She is an easy-going person who cracks jokes and laughs alot. She is alot likeTally because she has friends who now live in Prett town and she wants to know what there up to, and even if that means spying on them. I think Tally and Shay will become even better best friends than Tally and Peris, but they will son invite Peris to join them.

"Best Friends Forever" post 5

Why do you think that New Pretty Town advocates bungee jumping?
New Pretty Town advocates bungee jumping because it gives the pretties a rush. Since the pretties are lazy, they never experience the feeling that bungee jumping gives you. Plus, bungee jumping is perfect because it requires no work.

Find information about the history of bungee jumping and post it with the url adress.http://library.thinkquest.org/C0123122/historybungee.htm

"Best Friends Forever" post 4

Characterizatin: Tally:
Tally is a brave person, this is because she is willing to go to pretty town, even if this means getting aught. This action however, shows her caring side. This is because the whole reason she went to Pretty Town was to see her best friend Tally. Tally is an Ugly with frizzy brown hair and brown eyes. One trademark of Tally is the scar on her hand.
Characterization: Peris:
Peris is a brainwashed pretty, he was once an ugly and Tally's best friend. Peris is still Tally's best friend but he does not want to see her unless she is pretty. Peris has no scar on his hand like Tally because during his "pretty" surgery the surgeons removed it. Peris has big brown eyes and new skin.

How do you feel about the friendship of Tally and Peris? Are they true best friends, why or why not?
I think the friendship between Tally and Peris is not true. If Tally and Peris are really best friends, then they would find a way to be together. They are not best friends and I think Tally should move on and find a new best friend that will not care if she is "ugly".

"New Pretty Town"post 3

Find and quote ONE oxymoron from the chapter or ONE example of irony.

" safety sparkler"

Why do you think that Tally chose to wear a mask to a party deemed white tie?

Tally chose to wear a mask to a mask to a white tie party because she is ugly. I a pretty sees her in New Pretty Town she will be in major trouble because she is not sixteen yet.

Find information on masks and post it

"New Pretty Town" post 2

1 paragraph- Have you ever had a friend like Peris who abandoned your friendship after moving?Explain.
No I cannot say that i have ever had a friend that moved. However, if this happened I would feel really depressed because once you have a friend, you imagine the friendship lasting forever. even if you never do see each other again, i feel that you should be happy for them and wish them luck on making new friends.

Describe the following terms:

Interface ring- a peice of jewlry that allows an pretty to see a ugly
Toothbrush pill- a pill that you chew and then swallow for fresh breath without brushing your teeth
Cacophony-

Before Reading, post 1

  • How do you define beauty?

Beauty is not on the outside, it's on the inside that counts, unlike what most people think.

  • What would the world be like if everyone was "beautiful"?

If everyone had beauty, the world would be soo boring! This is because there would be no nice or weird people and you would like everyone because they would be all the same.

  • Post a picture of something you find pretty, and something you find ugly and explain the reasoning behind these choices in a paragraph.
  • For the pretty picture I chose a waterfall, for the ugly picture, I chose the trash. I chose the waterfall because it is a part of nature and it is full of joy. I chose the trash can because of its disgusting look, this is only disgusting because it is very germy and is old and gross.
